3 Steps to AMAZING Mashed Potatoes
Have you ever wondered how to make that perfect batch of mashed potatoes? The kind you get at a great restaurant...perfectly smooth and melting in your mouth.
We have 3 simple steps that you can take to make sure your mashed potatoes turn out the way our chef's do each and every time you make them.
Step 1: Boil in Heavily Salted Water
How salty you might ask? Consider filling your pot with sea water! That's how salty yours should be. If you're like me, you're probably asking why...
Well, according to Chef Teddy, heavily salted water pushes moisture away from the potatoes - and potatoes that aren't water-logged make for a much better finished product.
Step 2: Strain and Return to the Hot Pot
A water-logged potato will make for mushy (rather than mashed) potatoes. So, once you're done boiling, strain the potatoes through a colander and return them to the now-empty pot you were boiling them in.
Take the pot off of your heat and the residual heat in the pot and potatoes will help to dry them out.
Step 3: Cut Uniform Pieces
This step actually takes place before steps 1 and 2 but I thought we should save the hardest step for last. Of course, it's not really difficult because you're going to cut the potatoes anyway but it does take a little extra time to make things amazing!
So, why invest the extra time if it's just easier to do steps 1 and 2? You probably guessed it - cutting, boiling and drying uniform pieces helps to ensure uniform cooking throughout each piece.
What would happen if you throw a 4" round potato in the same boiling water as an 8" round potato? Either the 4" will be overcooked or the 8" will be under-cooked. So, take an extra 5-10 minutes and cut uniform pieces.
Bonus Step: Butter, Butter & More Butter
These 3 steps will get you awfully darn close to amazing mashed potatoes every time but there's just no substitute for more butter. And when you think you have enough...add a little bit more. No matter how you season your potatoes make sure there's tons of butter to make them melt in your mouth.
